A great and varied year! Year after year you think the Kilkenny Roots Festival couldn't get better but between John Cleere and the Commitee it always does! As if having a private chat with Billy Bragg in October wasn't enough, a selection of my photos of the gig in the SET Theatre were requested by Bragg Central for his press kit page and can be viewed here. Anyway - probably the highlight of my year!
The biggest news this month was a significant birthday for Griff who had a great (weekend) night in Cleere's after celebrating his actual birthday earlier in the week. Stars on the Night artwork for the poster and tickets has been submitted...this year's event is in aid of the Susie Long Hospice Fund, The Hope Foundation and Kilkenny Kats Special Olympics Club. The band, BiG PRiEST also played in Bray...another fine night out!
This particular weekend, I had the pleasure of seeing/hearing Hayden Karchmer perform at his opening slot for Clive Barnes and Gavin Glass in the Grand Social in Dublin. Hayden's a gent and a great singer-songwriter who was in Ireland that week to record his debut album "Company", due for release later this year. A couple of nights later, Clive was supporting Ian McLagan who I was fortunate enough to speak with after the gig. I only had a compact camera with me which was a pity but it was a great night and I got a few snaps all the same!
Hayden Karchmer | Ian McLaganThis summer has seen the worst top temperatures for almost 50 years and the coldest August for two decades! Nonetheless, it didn't rain at crucial wedding times, in gig venues or on my couch...I went to some great photography exhibitions this summer, the most reecnt being The Long View in The Gallery of Photography, Temple Bar, which addressed questions of landscape and memory, history and social change in both Irish and more global contexts. I particularly liked Jackie Nickerson's Gulf states photos and Anthony Haughey's ghost estates.
Been a while since I updated this News section but I guess the Gallery updates are essentially the latest news! ISince the last upate I guess I have continued to work as a Committee member for the Susie Long Hospice Fund. I produced a menu and flyer for a loca restauranteur, designed a website for a psychologist, was official photographer for the Smithwick's Rhythm and Roots Festival and undertook some wedding photography. Photography being the thing in recent times (albeit with an untimely Canon Error #99!). Summer holidays will also keep things relatively quiet!
Doing my best to wrap up work from the end of 2010. Circumstances conspired against me! One of the first pieces of work for iamGriff.com in 2011 is online work ahead of the General Election which is expected to take place in March of this year. Personally knowing two general election candiates (Dublin + Kilkenny) should keep me busy...
New 2011 Blog in development!
IamGriff's Blog is online and will act as a bit on the side to this website. What does that mean? It is anticipated that it will provide content that is perhaps less formal than that which appears on this website, more frequent updates, digital doodles and even actual text blog entries when time and subject matters allow. Much of the current content is from this site's Gallery as of this time but that will change! Hope you take a look!
On December 10th, a broad range of communities, community and youth organisations, trade unions, cultural groups, students and campaigning organisations came together to participate in a radical spectacle. The heart is literally being ripped out of our communities and this affects the country as a whole. The Spectacle was an act of creative resistance to the redundant policies of a redundant regime. Griff was part of the documentary team. A sample selection of photos can be found in the Gallery.
iamGriff.com went under the mouse for a facelift for no other reason other than it's nice to keep things fresh and looking lively!
I'll see how this layout fares and given that I don't have any spare time, it would be nice to not have to change it again in a hurry! It's heavily photo-laden at the moment but that's where the energy and work has been of late I guess!
